Main Dish – Turkey Swiss Stromboli

Jon J. Muth

Also at the children’s lit festival I went to last weekend, Jon J. Muth, a poet and artist spoke. His new book is Hi, Koo! – a season-full of haikus about a panda and his compatriots.

He said something I loved: “Haiku preserves an everyday miracle.” Isn’t that beautiful? I love haiku. It captures an a-ha moment, usually after being inspired by something in nature.

He did something I used to love to watch when I was little. I’m not positive who it was, but I think it may have been Captain Kangaroo who did live art lessons, showing how to draw some figure or animal.

That’s what Jon Muth did for us. He created two images, one of a bird.

He used a large Chinese brush with a black pigment. Fabulous!

And here’s the cover of his beautiful new book:

hi

Turkey Swiss Stromboli

This recipe from Julie W. (p. 61) was not only delicious, but also super easy because it starts with a pre-made pizza dough. The ingredients are layered on top–so simple and easy.

Here’s how it looked laid out flat.

Then I folded it over, pinched the edges together, and coated it with an egg wash.

Look at how beautifully it came out!

And it was delicious too. Julie W. submitted another winner!
