Tonight at Redeemer Lutheran in Elmhurst is not only our Holy Thursday service, but it’s also our sixth graders’ first communion. Lutheran congregations vary in their approach to first communion. Some wait until confirmation, usually at the end of the 8th grade year. However, other congregations welcome younger children to the altar. At Redeemer, the custom has been to have sixth graders’ first communion on Holy Thursday.
So in honor of first communion and the commemoration of the institution of the Lord’s Supper, I’ll give you a different type of recipe–one for communion bread.
This comes from Luther Seminary, and they report that the recipe has been tried all over the country. We’ve used it several times at Redeemer. It’s super easy to make, and quite tasty as well! The molasses in the recipe sweetens it up. It’s a great flatbread!
